Hodler is crypto slang for a long-term holder who refuses to sell through volatility, drawdowns, or hype cycles. The term comes from a 2013 BitcoinTalk forum post titled 'I AM HODLING' — a typo for 'holding' that the community adopted ironically.
Hodling is a buy-and-hold strategy at heart: ignore intermediate noise, accept large drawdowns, and rely on long-term appreciation. It is the simplest possible crypto investment thesis and historically the highest-Sharpe for Bitcoin if your start date was before 2017.
Hodling does not mean ignoring risk — sophisticated hodlers still size positions appropriately, custody securely, and diversify. The label refers to the holding-period commitment, not to a lack of discipline elsewhere.
