Break of structure (BOS) is a term from smart-money / ICT-style analysis describing the moment price closes through the most recent swing high (in an uptrend) or swing low (in a downtrend), confirming trend continuation. It says: the prevailing direction has been re-asserted.
BOS is distinct from CHoCH (change of character). BOS continues the existing trend; CHoCH flips it. A BOS in an uptrend = new higher high. A BOS in a downtrend = new lower low.
Practical use: BOS is the entry trigger in many breakout strategies, often combined with a volume filter or a pullback to a fair-value gap before a fill. Different traders use 'break' to mean either a wick through the level or a close beyond it — the choice matters and should be explicit.
Beispiel
Uptrend with last swing high at 52,000. Price rallies and closes at 52,400 — that close above 52,000 is a BOS, confirming continuation.
